2026 Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

Funded by a Metropolitan Transportation Commission grant, the Town is updating its Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. The project kicks off in September 2025 and is striving to finish in July of 2026.

PROJECT PROGRESS

Over the past four months, the project team which includes staff, members of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), and technical consultants TJKM have coordinated five outreach events, held three BPAC meetings, hosted a walk audit, and launched a survey on current biking and walking conditions in Fairfax.

These engagement activities will inform plan recommendations the town is currently drafting and proposing to the BPAC, Planning Commission, and Town Council in Summer 2026.

Recent discussions and survey results have focused on:

  • Better connecting the north and south sides of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard for walkers and bikers
  • Building an inventory of locations and concerns that create barriers to safe walking and biking
  • Identifying which projects have been accomplished since the last plan in 2016 and which have not
  • Making our walking and biking infrastructure more age friendly and accessible for all users
  • Finding ways to encourage walkers and bikers to use streets other than Sir Francis Drake
  • Strategizing how to make specific intersections easier to navigate for all users: drivers, walkers, and bikers
  • Educational programs that can teach all users how to communicate and navigate our streets better
  • Prioritizing investments on the routes that link to public transit and schools
  • Strategizing how the town can win grants and funding
