Bicycle-Pedestrian Committee

To make Fairfax an excellent place to walk and bicycle and reduce overall carbon emissions, it is important to increase the number of residents who walk and bike in the Town.

Objective

The Town of Fairfax Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (2016) calls for the Plan to be updated every five years to reflect new policies and requirements for bicycle and pedestrian funding. In 2024, the Town Council authorized a request to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) for the allocation of FY 2024/25 project funding. MTC recently awarded Fairfax this grant in full. The updated Master Plan will investigate existing bike and pedestrian infrastructure and suggest areas for improvement and expansion.
The Town is forming a Bike and Pedestrian Action Committee (BPAC) to provide guidance in the preparation of the update to the Plan. The BPAC will meet as needed but can anticipate convening monthly. The meetings will include a presentation on the plan’s progress and an opportunity to provide feedback.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Process Kicks Off

At the Town Council meeting held on May 21st, staff proposed a scope for a Pedestrian and Bicycle Masterplan Update and discussed the formation of a Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Committee (BPAC).

The Council adopted a resolution to form a BPAC. Five or seven BPAC members will be selected by the Council at the June 4th meeting, depending on the qualifications of the eleven applicants the Town received. The Council requested the BPAC includes a non-voting youth member. The Town will be reaching out to organizations and schools in Fairfax to identify the youth committee member. The first BPAC meeting will likely be held in July to assist the Town in selecting a consultant.

A request for proposal (RFP) will be posted and sent to qualified transportation planning firms inviting them to submit proposals. Firms that are located in Fairfax or nearby communities are encouraged to submit. The Town will collect proposals until early July.
