Council to consider updates to General Plan, Safety Element and Land Use Element

Posted on July 8, 2025

Updates to the Fairfax General Plan will be considered at the July 16, 2025 Town Council meeting. The Town is in the process of making targeted updates to the General Plan’s Land Use and Safety Elements in response to State Law. You are invited to attend the meeting to learn more about these updates and provide public comment. The current Fairfax 2010 to 2030 General Plan is a broad, long-term policy document that guides future development and conservation within the Town, serving as a blueprint for growth and land use decisions. Updates are summarized as follows:

The Safety Element. Last updated in 2012, updates are now required to ensure that the Town is fully prepared for a disaster and to also ensure that the Town is eligible for recovery funds in the case of a disaster declaration. The Town’s Local Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted on June 5, 2024 and this triggers updates to the Safety Element. New mapping information is newly available related to fire hazards and this should also be incorporated into the Safety Element. If the Safety Element is not updated in a timely manner, then the Town would be ineligible for some disaster funding.

Land Use Element. The Land Use Element, also last updated in 2012, is now out-of-date due to the adoption of the Housing Element in late 2023. An update is now required to eliminate inconsistencies between the two elements. The proposed updates are mostly technical in nature and do not significantly change policies.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the Women’s Club at 46 Park Road. Learn more about the General Plan and the proposed updates online.
