Marin County Severe Weather Event: December 21 – 23

Posted on December 17, 2025

What is happening?

The National Weather Service is forecasting multiple rain systems to impact Marin County beginning Thursday 12/18, bringing wet and unsettled weather to the region. The first storm, arriving Thursday, is expected to deliver up to 1.5 inches of rain through Saturday. This rainfall may saturate soils, increasing the potential for faster and more significant flooding when the next system arrives. The second storm, forecast from Sunday through Tuesday night, is expected to be the strongest and wettest of the series. Rainfall totals could range from 4 to 6 inches across the County.

During the heaviest periods of rain, creeks and streams will rise, localized flooding and ponding of water is possible in low-lying or poorly drained areas due to blocked culverts, drainages, and storm drains. Low-level roadways and crossings may experience flooding.

What could this mean for Marin residents?

  • Flooding: Low-lying areas or places with blocked storm drains could flood.
  • Road hazards: Roads may become slick and flooded. Debris and mudslides are possible on steep hillsides.
  • High water levels: Streams and creeks could rise, possibly reaching flood levels in some areas.
  • Power outages: Rain could cause power outages.

What actions can I take to prepare and/or stay safe?

Before the storm

  • Clear drains: Rake leaves and yard debris to keep gutters and storm drains clear. Place leaves and debris in green bin.
  • Sandbags: Use sandbags to protect flood-prone areas of your home or business.
  • Update your emergency kit: Make sure you have flashlights, radios, spare batteries, and other essentials.
  • Sign up for alerts: Register for emergency notifications at AlertMarin.
  • Plan ahead: Talk to your employer about working from home, especially if you live in an area prone to road flooding.
  • Stay informed: Visit Emergency.MarinCounty.gov for resources.

During the storm

  • Stay home if possible: Avoid unnecessary travel; wet and flooded roads can be dangerous and can prevent you from getting to your destination. Staying home is the safest option until the storm passes. If its an emergency, allow emergency responders to come to you.
  • Drive carefully if you must go out: Go slow, keep headlights on, watch for obstacles, and leave extra space between vehicles.
  • Turn around, don’t drown: Never attempt to walk or drive through standing water. Do not drive through flooded areas or around barricades.
  • Stay clear of downed power lines: Treat all fallen power lines as live; call 9-1-1 to report them.
  • Stay informed: Monitor Emergency.MarinCounty.gov for the latest updates.
