Posted on November 21, 2025

The California State Controller’s Office (SCO) has issued its audit findings for the Town of Fairfax’s management of state transportation funds for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024.

The Town received a clean audit, confirming full compliance with all applicable state laws and financial requirements.

The audit reviewed both the Town’s Special Gas Tax Street Fund and the Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Program (RMRP), verifying that Fairfax:

  • Properly accounted for and expended all state transportation funds
  • Met all maintenance-of-effort requirements under Senate Bill 1
  • Used transportation dollars solely for eligible street and road projects
  • Maintained adequate documentation supporting each expenditure

This audit reflects the Town’s continued commitment to transparency, accountability, and the effective use of public funds. Our goal is to ensure that every transportation dollar directly supports local road safety and maintenance for the benefit of our residents. – Town Manager, Heather Abrams

Historical Fund Reconciliation (2003–2024)

In addition to its standard audit scope, the SCO conducted an extended reconciliation of Fairfax’s Special Gas Tax Street Fund covering more than 20 years of financial activity (2003–2024). This comprehensive review confirmed that fund balances were accurately carried forward over the entire period and that the Town’s long-term financial management practices remain consistent with state accounting standards.
