Updates to the Fairfax General Plan were adopted at the July 16, 2025 Town Council meeting. These are targeted updates to the General Plan’s Land Use and Safety Elements in response to State Law. The current Fairfax 2010 to 2030 General Plan is a broad, long-term policy document that guides future development and conservation within the Town, serving as a blueprint for growth and land use decisions. The General Plan is intended as a “living document” that is updated from time to time to implement the Town’s vision for the future. These recent updates are summarized as follows:
- The Safety Element. The updates are intended to ensure that the Town is fully prepared for a disaster and to also ensure that the Town is eligible for recovery funds in the case of a disaster declaration. The Town’s Local Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted on June 5, 2024 and this triggers updates to the Safety Element. New mapping information is newly available related to fire hazards and this should also be incorporated into the Safety Element. If the Safety Element is not updated in a timely manner, then the Town would be ineligible for some disaster funding.
- Land Use Element. The Land Use Element has been out-of-date since the adoption of the Housing Element in late 2023. This update resolves inconsistencies between the two elements. The proposed updates are mostly technical in nature and do not significantly change policies. This update also incorporates the Town Center Element into the Land Use Element.
